Program Description

The Brain Stimulation Clinic is a regional resource for patients to access Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS).

Inclusion Criteria:
ECT: Client associated with Ontario Shores; client referred from external hospital outpatient programs deemed suitable for treatment by Brain Stimulation Psychiatrist; Medically stable and cleared for treatment

rTMS: Diagnosed with major depressive episode in the context of Major Depressive Disorder or Persistent Depressive Disorder; Agreeable to complete the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) depression scale and Generalized Anxiety Disorder – 7 item (GAD-7) scale before initial treatment, during (weekly) and after their course to track outcomes of treatment

Referrals accepted from:

Brain Stimulation Clinic:
All referred patients will undergo a consultation appointment with the Brain Stimulation Clinic Psychiatrist to assess appropriate treatment modality.
Referrals must include a consultation from the psychiatrist and/or GP/NP medical summary.

ECT Specific:
Patients affiliated with Ontario Shores: Inpatient and Outpatient referred by Ontario Shores Psychiatrists

Patients not affiliated with Ontario Shores: Inpatient and Outpatient referred by psychiatrist of external hospital
Medical Clearance must be completed initially before treatment by MRP/NP for IP.
Consult to see if client is suitable for treatment must be completed by a physician working in the Brain Stimulation Clinic
All clients must be cleared by one of the Ontario Shores Anesthetists.
If MRP/NP/or anesthetist suggest further investigation is needed for clearance before treatment client might be sent to a specialist (ex. Sleep study for apnea, echocardiogram, etc.).
