Counselling and Treatment - Mental Health
Seniors' Mental Health - Regional Consultation Service (SMH-RCS) functions as a regional tertiary psychiatric out-patient service. SMH-RCS collaborates with North East Behavioural Supports Ontario and key stakeholders to provide specialized community outreach consultation services for older adults residing in private homes, retirement homes, or long-term care homes within the North Bay District.
SMH-RCS provides mental health assessment, diagnosis, treatment recommendations and follow-up for older adults with late-onset mental health concerns as well as supportive education and counseling for family care partners. The program assists older adults with age-related psychiatric disorders and their caregivers.
SMH-RCS also facilitates outreach leadership throughout the Northeast by providing clinical support and education to satellite community seniors' mental health programs.
Consultation requests for in-depth assessments by our specialized team are initiated by family doctors/nurse practitioners.
Individuals exhibiting any of a broad range of emotional, cognitive, or behavioural symptoms, (usually representing a significant change from their previous functioning) may be referred. The target population includes seniors with one or more of the following criteria: mental health and substance use complicated by medical illness and/or functional needs; severe mental illness and requiring complex care; responsive behaviours/personal expressions associated with dementia and/or other mental illness; severe late-onset mental illness; mental health problems and illness and substance use; in occasional circumstances, persons under the age of 65 who have an age-related mental illness.
