Diversion and Court Support - Mental Health
The Human Services Justice System Program promotes development of effective Human Services and Justice interface strategies. Court Support / Court Diversion assists people with mental disorders who come in conflict with the criminal justice system. Court support, including a Mental Health Court Diversion Program, is provided in criminal courts at Barrie, Collingwood, Midland and Orillia.
Anyone can make a referral. No referral form is required. Diversion Program Criteria: individual with a mental disorder (includes SMI, intellectual disability, acquired brain injury), charged in Simcoe County with a minor criminal offence, resided in Simcoe County at time of police incident, approved for diversion by Crown Attorney, willing to attend and participate in community support / treatment services. Court Diversion Program is a voluntary, pre-trial procedure. The goal is to minimize future involvement in the criminal justice system. With diversion there is no trial and no conviction.
