Bed-Based Treatment - Mental Health
The Birchlands Step-Up Step-Down Program is designed for youth who are experiencing significant mental health difficulties. A brief stay will support stabilization, dialectical behaviour skill building and transition, allowing for a planned return to their home environment and community.
Upon return to their home environment, program staff will provide continued service to support a successful transition and connection to community support. A key component of the program will be collaboration with families/caregivers and community support throughout the course of the program.
Youth can Step-Up from outpatient or community-based services to prevent a hospital stay or Step-Down from various intensive services, including hospitals or secure treatment, for additional stabilization and transition support.
Referrals are accepted from case managers from hospitals or a children's mental health service provider. Calls for referrals will be made when there is anticipated bed availability. No wait lists when beds are full.
The identified client:
- must have a stable and consistent living arrangement for home visits;
- must have a reliable means of being transported to program following home times;
- needs to be able to manage in a group environment and does not require continuous one to one support in order to manage behaviour or manage safety;
- caregivers are willing and able to participate in services, plan of care meetings and check-ins with program staff;
