Founded in 1873, YWCA Toronto is one of the city's oldest and most experienced providers of shelter services, affordable housing and support services, offering a range of facilities and programs, including employment, permanent housing, shelters and group support opportunities for women, girls, and gender diverse individuals. Mental health programs are offered with a trauma informed model of support where participants have access to housing and support programs that offer life skills and counselling for women with mental health or mental health and addictions issues who want to make changes in their lives. Specifically, women and woman-led families of aboriginal descent residing in designated, permanent housing units in downtown Toronto receive supports to maintain independent living and engage with community, and women in scattered, supportive units in South Etobicoke receive case management supports. Community-based group programming is provided for women in the North York area to promote social inclusion and overall wellbeing.
