The primary focus of TOH's mental health programming is related to the early identification and treatment of severe mental illness. Most of our services are geared to provide 'acute' care; that is, patients treated at TOH are primarily being seen for problems that are amenable to intervention over a short duration. For patients who require longer inpatient care, we rely on the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre to accept transfers of patients. This allows TOH to maintain accessibility for new patients arriving in the Emergency Department who require admission to one of our mental health beds. Each mental health program is multidisciplinary, with nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, recreational therapists, a clinical dietician, and advanced practice nurses. In addition, programs have a clinical manager and administrative support personnel, some have a program evaluator, and there is a corporate mental health quality improvement coordinator.
