A 23-bed inpatient; 59-day length of stay unit that provides specialized services to meet the mental health needs of individuals with a primary diagnosis of dementia and presenting with responsive behaviours or severe psychiatric symptomatology. This includes psychogeriatric resources to address the assessment, management and transitional care needs of the client with the goal of reintegration to community or long term care.
Inclusion criteria:
- Individuals usually 65 years old and older who are medically stable and have age-related dementia, showing signs of behavioural disturbance and resistance to treatment.
- Individuals under 65 who fit diagnostic criteria will be considered on a case by case basis.
Focus: Mental Health
A 25-bed inpatient unit that provides specialized services to meet the complex mental health needs of seniors with serious mental illness including individuals who are resistant to treatment. An interprofessional healthcare team provides a range of psychogeriatric resources to address the assessment, diagnostic, treatment and transitional care needs of seniors with complex mental health challenges.
Services Offered:
- Comprehensive assessments provided by an inter-professional team that identify mental health issues, clarify diagnosis and identify possible factors that contribute to challenging behaviours
- Individualized care plans, which are developed to manage symptoms, address needs and develop management techniques
- Education for patients, families and caregivers
- Discharge planning to assist patients as they transition into the community or long-term care

A 10-bed inpatient unit that provides service to adults with an intellectual disability and a serious mental illness and/or behavioural challenges. A clinical service combining the assessment and treatment of those with intellectual disabilities with mental health resources to offer patients specialized psychiatric treatment and behavioural programming.

Provides services to individuals 18 years old and older who are medically stable and have an intellectual disability and a serious mental illness and/or associated challenging behaviours. Educational presentations are available upon request.
Inclusion Criteria:
Individuals between 18-65 years of age must be medically stable and present with an intellectual disability (IQ below 70, diagnosed prior to age 18) and a serious mental health illness and/or associated behavioural difficulties.

Provides short term, focused consultation and treatment to women with perinatal mood disorders and other reproductive issues that affect a woman’s mental health.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Women 18 years of age and older
- Mental illness that is significant enough to impair function and unique to women:
- Women with symptoms of, or at elevated risk of developing a perinatal mood disorder such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, or psychosis in the perinatal period (pregnancy and postpartum up to one year)
- Women with an existing mood, anxiety or psychotic disorder in the perinatal period
- Perimenopause or menopause with significant emotional dysregulation
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (Psychiatry or Nurse Practitioner Assessment only)
Exclusion Criteria:
- The presenting mental health issue has no relationship to the female reproductive system.
- Patient is primarily concerned with applications for ODSP/insurance/legal proceedings/CAS assessment

For individuals 18 to 65 years old who have a complex clinical condition. The condition must include diagnosis of multiple serious mental illnesses and signs of resistance to treatment, persistence of illness (present longer than six months) and impaired functional ability.
Services offered include: Psychotherapy, medication support, symptom management and support. Follow up includes support for the individuals’ recovery process and goal attainment.

The Outpatient Complex Psychosis and Consultation Service at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (Ontario Shores) provides flexible and tailored service. Recovery-focused care is provided by an interprofessional healthcare team that works with the patient to develop an individualized care plan to meet the patient's needs. Eligible individuals are 18 to 65 years old who have been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder and must show signs of resistance to treatment, persistence of illness (present longer than six months) and impaired functional ability.

This program includes an inter-professional team that provides flexible service tailored to the individual needs of a person. As a natural extension of the specialty inpatient service a range of expert services that include: assessments, consultations, behavioural support, shared care, and broker service. Follow up includes: ongoing support for the individual's recovery process and goal attainment supportive counseling, medication support, symptom management and support).
Inclusion Criteria:
- 18 to 65 years old
- Prominent symptoms of a depression, mood disorder, anxiety disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Willing to attending appointments, groups or coaching sessions with a clinician weekly and as required with an NP or a psychiatrist, if applicable
- Has goals relating to psychoeducation, treatment, and recovery
- If actively engaged in individual therapy in the community, may be referred for one-time consultation only or shared care

Meets the educational needs of health care staff working in long-term care facilities, community service agencies and homecare organizations including Home and Community Care Support Services Central East.
The Psychogeriatric Resource Consultants (PRCs) specialize in the translation of knowledge to practice using both didactic education and case based learning. The PRCs also are responsible for the development of dementia networks in the Durham Region and work collaboratively with Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO).

Provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for individuals 18 years and older experiencing symptoms of Traumatic stress/Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and who are experiencing a significant impact on emotional, physical, interpersonal and vocational functioning.
Services include: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) – Individual and Group Therapy.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Individuals 18 and over that are experiencing symptoms of traumatic stress/Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- It is recommended that individuals are connected to a Health Care Provider in the community e.g. Family Physician/NP, Nurse Practitioner, Community Psychiatrist who oversee psychiatric care
- Symptoms evident for greater than 3 months
Exclusion criteria: intellectual disability will be looked at on a case by case basis; severe neurocognitive disorder will be looked at on a case by case basis; borderline personality disorder as primary diagnosis or borderline personality disorder symptoms as primary focus of treatment; persons with dementia; organic brain syndrome and/or mild acquired brain injury, such as reading at a grade 5 level; symptoms evident for less than 3 months.

A a provincial, tertiary care unit for young people aged 12-18.
Individuals are offered a period of assessment, medication stabilization and/or evidence informed individual or group psychotherapeutic treatments focusing on symptom management and improvement of function. The treatment goal of the unit is diagnostic clarification, symptom stabilization; functional improvement and timely transition back to a supportive community environment.
Inclusion Criteria:
- 12 up to 18 years old
- Treatment refractory symptoms of mood, psychosis, anxiety requiring hospitalization

- Severe conduct and/or behavioural issues
- Court Ordered Forensic Detention
- Eating Disorders as a primary diagnosis

An outpatient mental health assessment clinic for young people aged 12-17. Individuals are offered a period of assessment, medication stabilization and/or evidence informed individual or group psychotherapeutic treatments focusing on symptom management and improvement of function.

- Age 12 to 18th birthday
- Presenting mental health symptoms
- Prominent symptoms of mood, anxiety or borderline trait disorders

Provides mental health and education services in a local community high school to support students as they transition into a community setting. Services include individual rehabilitation therapy, life and social skills assessment and training, educational remediation and instruction, and recreational programming.

Provides out patients with an opportunity to earn Ontario Secondary School credits in partnership with the Durham District School Board. The goal is to prepare students for reintegration into community schools, post-secondary institutions or employment.

Serves individuals, 25 years of age and older, who have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and are experiencing difficulties managing their symptoms. The goals of this therapy are to reduce symptomatology: maladaptive behaviours, and current psychological distress associated with BPD, decreasing frequency of admissions to in-patient units and ER visits, decreasing length of stay in in-patient services, increasing coping skills, and improving quality of life for individuals who have been diagnosed with having Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
Services offered:
The clinic offers clients Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) through a 28 week comprehensive program, or a 28 week DBT Skills Training Program. After completion of the comprehensive program at Ontario Shores, an 8 week aftercare program may be offered based on additional criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, with or without Co-occurring Anxiety Disorders, Major Depressive Disorder, Eating Disorders, or Addictions.
- All treatment options for BPD available in the client’s community have been unable to assist the patient reach recovery
- Ability to read and write at a grade 8 level

Vocational Rehabilitation, Education, and Employment services provides individual assessment, career and education counseling, skills training, and community employment opportunities for both inpatients and outpatients in a welcoming and recovery- oriented environment.

- Job Development and Job Coaching (Ontario Shores is an approved ODSP Service Provider)
- Individual Work Placement programs in hospital
- Job readiness and Pre-employment programs in association with the Abilities Centre
Inclusion Criteria:
Outpatients 16 years and older requiring assistance with education or employment

A 12 bed unit for children and adolescents with an eating disorder.
Programming includes: Intensive individual therapy; group and family therapy; Psychoeducation; Meal support, nutrition and eating rehabilitation; Psychopharmacologic treatment; Schooling; Treatment for co-morbid disorders. Modalities used include; CBT, DBT, EFT and FBT. Parent and family involvement is a key component of the clinical programming.
During their time at Ontario Shores, patients will also have access to teachers who can assist with their education needs.

A Brain Stimulation Clinic that comprises of two services - Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS).
rTMS (or TMS), is a non-invasive treatment option for those who have treatment resistant depression and are unable to receive ECT but would benefit from a similar type of treatment.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a safe and effective medical treatment for certain psychiatric conditions such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and some episodes of schizophrenia. The procedure is done under general anaesthesia.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Individuals struggling with depression or other mood disorders
ECT: individuals from adolescents to geriatrics are eligible for this treatment option and must be medically stable and cleared for treatment
rTMS: Referrals are accepted for individuals 18 years of age and older
Exclusion Criteria:
rTMS is not suitable for those with a history of seizures, active suicidal/homicidal ideation, implanted neurostimulator or defribrillator, cochlear implants, or pacemakers

For individuals age of 65 and older with a psychiatric concern that is complex in nature or has not responded to treatment, presenting with one or more of the following: cognitive changes, behavioural changes, mood changes, anxiety or psychotic symptoms.
Services we offer include:
- Specialized medical consultations (geriatric psychiatry, nurse practitioner, RN, BT)
- Short term psychiatric follow-up for treatment optimization
Inclusion Criteria: Memory concerns, responsive behaviours, general mental health (mood anxiety, psychosis). Client must reside in a long term care home and require geriatric specific care.

Provides publicly funded evidence-based, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and related approaches to Ontarians with depression, anxiety, and anxiety-related conditions. OSP includes CBT-based services ranging from self-administered strategies (like BounceBack with support from a coach or therapist) to weekly, one-on-one or group therapy, using a stepped care approach.
Focus: Mental Health
Provide confidential support for community and health care workers managing stressors related to COVID-19 and other crises. Provides quick access to a trained mental health professional to help individuals manage stress and build resiliency and coping skills.

Health care workers who are experiencing increased feelings of anxiety and depression.
Exclusion Criteria:
Primary diagnosis and symptomatology relating to personality disorder or addiction
Patient is primarily concerned with applications for ODSP/insurance/legal proceedings/CAS assessment

Provides an inter-professional team dedicated to serving the psychological needs of all Public Safety Personnel/First Responders in the province and offers prevention services, crisis support, and treatment in the form of individual and group therapy. Virtual and in-person supports (through Wounded Warriors venue partners) are available.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Must be Public Safety Personnel/First Responder which includes; police personnel, fire fighters, correctional officers, paramedics, dispatchers, border services, probation and parole officers.
- Must be a resident of Ontario

All referrals to Ontario Shores are received by a triage nurse in the Central Intake department. An interprofessional team of intake and specialized clinicians work collaboratively with medical staff to provide prompt feedback on all referrals that include disposition, supported system navigation and recommended next steps.
Patients are referred to the most appropriate service based on individual criteria. Each program or service will have its own criteria for referral source and eligibility.
